Jerry Yan: “Journey is a book”

“Travelling is a Book”
Jerry, during an interview with our journalist repeatedly stressed this.

“Some people say I do agree with this. However, level in changes may vary due to each individual on different moods, attitudes, and incidents that occurred on the trip”.

“In my opinion, journey is more like a book, in this book, one might get excited to start with, enjoy the laziness on a return trip, have reverie in a clear late afternoon, or linger with loneliness on a rainy night. Journey like this, long or short, sometimes can be referred to a forever fresh and meaningful essay, sometimes a simple piece of poetry with philosophy.

“These articles, large or small, putting up together pieces by pieces, can be rolled up into a book. You can casually turn memory pages in this book backward and forward, each page may contain a scene, convey some kind of mood, and with these memory scenes which are mixed and blended, can turn into a theory and a correct attitude in life”.

“Finally, this theory and attitude can inspire and accompany me continuously on my way, encouraging me to go through thousand over thousand miles of high land, crossing pools of separated water even under hindered clouds, but I am not left alone. This kind of trip is exactly what I need now.” Jerry Yan firmly told us.

Loud laughter could be heard from inside one of the dressing rooms at the Taipei Arena as people rushed about in the hallway getting ready for a concert.

Inside, Taiwanese actor-singer Jerry Yan (Yen Cheng Xu) is in a good mood while talking to a music industry executive he has not seen in a long while. He is dressed in a track suit and his hairstyle has not changed much since he broke into the entertainment scene almost 10 years ago playing the lead role in the drama Meteor Garden.

It is by no coincidence that his favourite role to date is still that of Dao Ming Si because he strongly identifies with it. No, not so much with the character’s enfant terrible side but with being naive and straight-forward.

“I am quite open as a person, not really quiet. At times I am even naughty,” he tells popdom.

This is contrary to how the press has pictured him as a perfectionist who is so difficult to work with. In the dressing room, he is surrounded by people who have been with him since he started, including his manager known as Fenny to his fans.

Yan describes himself as a kid at heart. “There is a part of me that refuses to grow up because in adults’ world, people may try to achieve their goals by every means even by hurting other people. But the environment I grew up in was very simple,” he explains.

This may be the reason why the people around him are quite protective, refusing—albeit nicely—to have his photo taken because he is not made up yet. Yan sits there quietly listening to them but in the end gently agrees to have a spontaneous photo session while his make-up artist scrambles to wipe his face.

Not that he needed it anyway. Like most idols, Yan looks great without make-up and even in a dull track suit.

He gives off that impression that he does not really care about how he looks, something he shares in common with Van Fan (Fan Yi Chen), another actor-singer.

Fan first became famous singing the Mandarin version of I Believe, the theme song from the Korean movie My Sassy Girl. He was on his way to stardom in 2006 when he was caught by Taiwan paparazzi peeing in public.

His career went downhill and he could have become history if not for Cape No. 7 released in 2008 that saw him playing a role very close to home: a down-and-out musician.

“I had nothing to do during that time so I decided to accept it. And this movie has connections to music,” he says in a separate interview with popdom.

As Aga, Fan recaptured the audience’s interest and fans’ imagination. “Generally speaking, the character was very similar to me. During that time, I was kind of depressed because after being in the industry for several years, I was still struggling.”

He appeared in an ‘idol drama’, Success Story of Treasure Island’s Young Girl the same year as the peeing scandal, but the project was not a success story at all.

However, Cape No. 7 put him back in the limelight with two films following after: L-O-V-E and Gangster Rock.

He is so busy these days that this interview is done during his lunch break while rehearsing for a concert. He sips his soup hurriedly and afterwards, is ushered off for costume change, with no time to eat anything else. No wonder these people are so thin.

In Gangster Rock, Fan played another musician, this time of the purist kind who only wants to rock and roll and does not care about much else.

Fans have accepted his rocker image—a far cry from his balladeer beginnings—and Fan himself seems very much aware of this by playing it to the hilt, painting his nails black and forming a two-man band called CRAZE to channel more of his new-found rocker glory.
In the morning of this interview, Fan was wearing a black hat that hid his hair; later that evening, he had dyed his hair blonde when he toured Taipei cinemas promoting Gangster Rock with his posse.

Any faint-hearted wannabe would have given up years ago when he lost his ticket to stardom because of a public infraction, but not Fan it seems. He hasn’t turned full-time bad boy but the experience has not made him wary about going out in public either.

“I still enjoy life, I still go out like any normal person,” he says. But he admits that he has become more protective of his personal life “because I don’t think I should be judged by the whole world because of it”.

The earlier scandal may have also freed Fan from being trapped in an idol image. “I just try to present myself and not think of being an idol. (What people see onstage) is part of being me, part of who I am.”

This can’t be said for Yan, however. Imagine the horror of having one of the members of F4 caught doing something private in public. There goes not only the high-profile projects but the endorsements as well.
Obviously, Yan is a different kind of idol from Fan, and he almost melted on the spot out of sheer embarrassment when told he remains to be Taiwan’s No. 1 poster boy.

“I never (thought of it that way). Compared to a lot of Taiwanese artistes, we were lucky because we had a lot of opportunities to go to other countries. And after seeing the entertainers from other countries, I think we still have a lot to learn,” he says.

He notes that his need to make his work above par may have been previously misinterpreted as being demanding and difficult.

“Some entertainers may hurt others in order to get what they want but I never think of hurting anyone. Sometimes I may have tried too hard on my work and there will be people saying ‘look, he is famous now, that’s why he complains a lot’. But my intention is simply because I have a lot of fans around Asia and I don’t want to look like an idiot without any talent or knowledge. For example, when you do a new album, you want it to be the best  but there may be people thinking you complain too much. That is the dilemma.”

Like other idols too, Yan has realised it is not easy to find happiness in an industry that ironically makes business in trying to make fans happy.

“Being happy is quite difficult. We became famous overnight, since then I have set strict standards for myself and wanted to do everything perfectly and gradually I found myself quite unhappy,” he says. “But when you are unhappy, people around you can feel that and they will be affected. So when everybody is unhappy, the work will be terrible.”

Yan had thought of quitting but not because of fame and the loss of privacy that comes with it. “The pressure was not from being famous, but after going through a lot of things, I sometimes might want to give up because I feel too tired.”

Idols, like you and me, are also human beings who can only take so much.

自由論 VOICE
文﹕楊麗玲 照片提供﹕{9314男人與男孩} TEXT : Yang Li Ling Photos : {9314 Man & Boy}

I seldom bother about fans’ requests. It’s because of my character as well as some previous not so pleasant experiences.

Yet on a certain day, Ms T who adores Jerry Yan sent me a short email. She was very polite and expressed that she wanted to send me a copy of Jerry Yan’s newly released pictorial ~ {9314 Man & Boy} as a gesture of thanks on behalf of her Idol.

When I sent an email to thank her, I unintentionally mentioned how I was having loads of trouble arranging for an interview. Ms T said that she could help out.

Within a few days, I received news unexpectedly. Everyone was in disbelief. Even when the TV Station and Record Company were not able to do anything, a fan easily did it. And there wasn’t any need to censor the questions as well.

Ms T emailed the details of the interview to Jerry out of kind consideration. Thus he had some idea before we started.

Perhaps because of this, Jerry felt at ease during the 40 minutes interview.

I’ve come across many types of fans but those who are rational and understanding to their Idol are few and far between.

Told Jerry that his fans are really special and joked about how he actually “educated”them”… “I didn’t really. Frankly speaking, I am the one that is educated by those who like me. Ha ha ! Many a time they would encourage me, support me and even tell me areas that I could work on. I’m more like a kid and they are always by the side, correcting me and caring for me. Many of my friends are like big sisters to me and some are even mothers themselves. In fact, I’m more like their child, they kept giving me so much strength and directing me to the right path. It’s like the reverse actually. I do feel quite embarrassed by that. ”he said.

His luggage was over-weight from their gifts and yet he still lagged them from all over the world back to Taipei. Kept them stored in an empty house. In the An Hui Province of China, they set up “Jerry Yan Chun Rui School” out of their own pockets and maintained it all these years through their own efforts by doing charity for their Idol.

I recalled a few years back, he said to me, “When I grow old one day, the friends that like me will also be of age. I hope that everyone will at least remember that whilst supporting their Idol, they also did something good.”

He’s always been a man of his words and he really did it.

Ms T gave me the sweets that Yu Ping/Jerry Yan gave to Yang Guo/Ella in the serial {Down With Love}. The gift though small but really full of thought.

Tens of thousands of fans maketh a Star. Yet a Star enlightening the fans really makes the world a much better place.

~ THE END ~

Not a Darling in Everyone’s Eyes
Exclusive Interview by Yang Li Ling

His favourite book is  {The Little Prince}.
To everyone, the picture is merely a hat but only he, the Little Prince can see that it is a huge elephant digesting a huge python.
Since he belonged to a different planet and thus he naturally goes against the norm.
He said to be loved by everyone is a natural gift.
Not to be forced.

“We went to Mongolia together.”
His rather excited voice came through the phone receiver and yet I didn’t get a chance to say anything of my usual polite greeting.
That was the end of 2006, we had gone to Mongolia with the World Vision. He came to Singapore for the promotion in early 2007 and we have not spoken since then.
The impressions I had of him were A) he doesn’t cooperate with the media’s sensationalizing efforts; B) he does help to carry the luggage and ‘mops up’ his assistant’s left-over food.

I was taken aback when he calls my name directly.

By the way, are you alright?

“I don’t sound alright?” he laughed very loudly, filled with boyish mischief.

Told him that I read his pictorial several times over.

“Really? Really? You really did. Ha ha!” He was like a kid, laughing so happily.

Yes and I was touched by what his friends wrote about him.

Character A : His pal, Da Mao. Jerry took the initiative to befriended Da Mao as he wanted a discount when buying health products.
When his pal was down in the dumps, he sacrificed the only time he had during rehearsals at the Hong Kong Coliseum. Listening to an hour without even eating his dinner. Da Mao took over a dilapidated swimming pool, Jerry suddenly appeared to paint with him. He spent the whole day and had to fly overseas for a concert early the next morning.

Character B : Xiao Qiu, his Secondary Schoolmate and Nintendo game playmate.
When he got into a fight, he throw a bee-hive to help-out. Xiao Qiu wanted to chase after his sister,  he helped him ask her out and also followed along to eat a free steak. His mobile phone number hasn’t changed for the past 15 years. When he sees an old lady picking from the trash, he would give her a red packet. Or he would buy some gum or a flower for NT$1000.

Character C : Works at a restaurant by day, a pub by night and the occasional modeling assignment, he got to know stylist, Chen Sun Hua.
They quarreled over work and he deliberately distanced himself for a whole year. When the stylist’s father passed away, he drove from Taipei, took a train, crossed an entire mountain to get to Hua Lian, just to pay his respects.

。。。。。What he did also includes . . . . . . .
When he gets excited over music, he would give someone a stereo system.
When he sees someone touching a dog, he would give that person a dog a few days later.
In order to help a friend out, he bought a car for NT$280,000 but that ‘friend’ disappeared. That’s why he still drives a lousy car and yet he doesn’t mind as he is the only victim.

If all the above stories were true,
this boy/man is extra-ordinarily kind.

Ling : How do you feel after you’ve taken out all those past memories and has to face them all over again?

Jerry : Oh . . . . . . I didn’t really mean to bring up anything specifically. I just wanted to write about my experienced. To me, be it good or bad, they are all part of my journey in Life and are all very important to me.

Ling : You’ve always been very private and low-key, aren’t you afraid that others might know too much?

Jerry : I think it’s fine. Since I haven’t done anything bad so I needn’t be afraid.

Ling : I find the experiences with your old classmates and pals very interesting. It feels like though you are the Big Star, Jerry Yan, you haven’t changed?

Jerry : That’s right. Basically, I haven’t changed much. The only real change I feel is that I’ve become more considerate in dealing with others.

Ling : Do you think it’s possible that the ‘you’ now could return to good old days?

Jerry : Ha ha ha ha! It would be very difficult.

Ling : Is there a period in time where you miss?

Jerry : My school days were very carefree and very happy. I rather miss those times when I was younger.

Ling : Have you changed from a boy into a man? Where do you think you have grown the most?

Jerry : Actually I feel that I have changed from a boy to an older boy, ha ha ha. It should be a while more before I become a man. The most growth should be that I can now see the hardships of others.

Ling : Being in this Line, isn’t it rather difficult to be a boy?

Jerry : Yes, very much so. Most people won’t see Jerry Yan as a boy so when he isn’t doing well or might be inconsiderate or immature at times, they would blow it up and scrutinize. So during that point in time there would be many . . . . . . ha ha ha ha.

Ling : Do you really feel that you’re still not good enough?

Jerry : Of course, I do. There are many things to learn in Life and I’m working hard at adapting. I will still tell myself and try to be the truest . . . . . .I am actually rather childish. I hope that I do not become too mature. I hope that I can be very earnest and very sincere in facing everyone around me. But being too goody goody or too considerate, that isn’t like me really.

Ling : To survive in this Line, a boy would eventually become a man one day?

Jerry : That’s right but that supposed change is learning to understanding to others. Like when I was very tired and busy at work, I would only see myself before. I would just feel that I’m very tired and it’s very hard work. But now it’s different, no matter how hard I’ve worked, I would still pay attention to those around me. I feel that the crew members are working very hard as well and they are even more tired than us. So when I see how hard they’ve worked, I become more understanding and want to treat them well. That makes me very happy.

Ling : You said that there were some setbacks that made you grow in these few years?

Jerry : Before, I’ve felt that nobody is born knowing how to be considerate to others. Not everyone is able to read other’s needs or is so considerate or a darling in everyone’s eyes. But I’ve gradually gained many insights through my work environment. I am slowly becoming more understanding and grateful. One needs to go through these things and I have gradually learnt from them. I’ve come to realize that it is only after so many things have happened that one can become more adaptable.

Ling : Are you the sort that you often talk to yourself?

Jerry : Occasionally. At times when I don’t do well, I would scold myself and chide myself for not doing better.

Ling : What do you often talk to yourself about?

Jerry : To do even better. Ha! Life has many different stages and difficulties. Even my friends think I’m doing fine now but I could be facing my own very painful stage. I will do my best to accept this pain and pressure. I believe that this would result in an every greater change in me.

Ling : Could the pain and pressure be due to the burden of Stardom?

Jerry : Not exactly. Some people might not think too much but I am someone who thinks too much and easily gets upset. So I watch inspirational films. Like I was watching a documentary some time ago. It was about how the blind face the world. They have to be so positive in order to pull themselves through Life. You may not have thought about it but because we have eyes and can see the beauty in the world, that’s something great. At that moment I felt very grateful and thankful.

It is really difficult. We are all in this society and every moment we have to face different situations and have different moods so we really can only work hard at . . . . . . I am a public figure so I hope that I can give my optimism and happiness to everyone so that they won’t see my not-so-good side.

Ling : You seem to have done some heart-warming deeds but yet you do it quietly on the side?

Jerry : I was very mischievous when I was young. I enjoyed giving those around me surprises but I would appear to be nonchalant about it.

Ling : Are you purposely trying to hide your feelings?

Jerry : Not really on suppose. It is a kind of habit since young. Like the way I show my concern for my mother is very different from how others would show concern to their mothers.

It seems that his car is the lousiest amongst all the Superstars.
He once had a dream of owning a sport car.
Now his mother is wearing ‘it’.
He conned his mother into a jade jewelry shop on pretense that he needs her hand to try a bangle as a gift for a friend. Once that $300,000 bangle is on her hand, he refused to let her take it off.
He was very happy that his dream of owning a sports car has come true.

The pictorial book started with a love that has since gone.
This should have been a love story.
They started off very young in the story. As they grew and have gone through a lot together, far more beyond their youthful years . . . . . . yet once off-guard . . . . . .it became a love fairy tale.

This love is very touching.
The main characters are handsome and beautiful making it even more heart-wrenching.

I liked the part when the boy and girl went to Hakoune, Japan to the {Little Prince Musemum}. They were in love and landed on planet B612 . Later on, the boy and girl turned into the Prince and Princess.
The ever-present search lights are stalking them outside the castle. The story ended with the Prince fighting against all odds to be with the sickly Princess, both of them cried in each other’s arms.
The Princess should be Lin Zhi Ling.
He never spoke of this name but we shall keep it in our hearts.
I knew that he didn’t want to talk about it. It is after all water under the bridge.
Yet it is a pivotal memory in his Life and so I had to mention even if  I didn’t wish to.
On the end of the receiver, his voice suddenly lowered. In between the off and on silence pauses, there was some soft  laughter.
Really couldn’t bear to.
To disturb his heart so.

Ling : After having loved so deeply, do you still believe you can find true love?

Jerry : There should still be anticipation in my heart. Actually being in love is the most beautiful. Not matter how much you earn or what you have, you can never ever attach a monetary value on it. Yet when in love, you’ll be so touched to your heart that you can’t help but be happy. During my Senior High days, I was more of an introvert and wasn’t good at expressing myself. I had a crush on a Senior for 3 whole years and didn’t say a thing. But when I see her everyday, I was so happy . . . Wow! I can still remember that feeling.

Ling : Do think you can still not care about anything because of love?

Jerry : Can I be like that now? I should be more rational. In the past I would but after what I’ve been through, the manner in which I handle affairs of the heart will more or less change.

Ling : You said that you hope that the one you fall in love with is someone ordinary. So she can like you for being ordinary. But with so many people idolizing you, won’t it be difficult to enjoy the happiness of having a very ordinary love?

Jerry : I don’t think so. Please don’t think that way, we must always give ourselves hope. When you have such a hope, you can be happy more easily. You should always have the mindset that unexpected things will happen to you and so the world is full of anticipations. And we can live with more motivations in Life. Do I sound very solemn speaking this way? Ha ha!

Ling : What kind of Love do you anticipate having?

Jerry : What kind . . . . . .how it should be? When I see her I can’t help but be happy. And it’s not because of her status or any outwardly appearance, just simply being happy.

Ling : The Prince and Princess are unable to have a fairy tale ending, is it because of the circumstance? Or was it timing? Or perhaps they’ve met each other too early on?

Jerry : Ha, oh . . . . . . .

Ling : At your present circumstance, it’s not quite possible to have a beautiful and fairy tale like love? Too many obstacles?

Jerry : Oh . . . . .many things happened and what has past can no longer be same. It’s difficult to pinpoint a certain cause.

Ling : A beautiful fairy tale, two persons falling in love but yet are unable to be together. When I read that, I was touched and saddened.

Jerry : No, not at all. We will always have thanks in our hearts. Actually in love even if it ends in separation, within our hearts we should still wish the other happiness. I think it’s enough. In Life,   there are many things are beyond our control. And nothing is definitely as we wish so I feel that wishing the other happiness is wonderful. It’s because we have such well-wishes for each other in our hearts, perhaps if one day we meet on the street, we may just smile and know in our hearts. That is in fact very beautiful in itself.

The most beautiful fairy tale is that the Prince and the Princess end up together.
Perhaps later on, at a certain day, the both may meet again. It may be in at corner which is but 100 metres away from planet B12.
He said, ‘It because I really love her so I let her leave. If you truly love someone, you should understand this.’
She said, ‘In this world, he has been the best to me.’
When they talk about each other later on, when they about each other to friends, they would shed tears . . . . . .
Unable to give the other happiness and yet deep within their hearts, they wish each other happiness.
The Little Prince shall always feel for that one and only rose.

still to be continued.....

South Australia, Adelaide, a dream place for starting, eight years ago, there was a boy in here opened a Pandora’s box, he said that he seemed to have touched a dream.  Over the past 8 years, when pain, confusion and lingering over him one by one to pray, he did not give up because the support he has been getting, is in that “original dream.”

Recently, Jerry Yan came to Beijing, with this dream record album – “Man and Boy 9314”, he would like to share with you his past 8-year experience in this book, just like a story.  This photo book is a mirror of Jerry Yan, King of Idol for so many years, he said, “Whether I am playing roles in drama, or not, make-up, the fewer the better” for he wants to return to his true self,“now a key to zero, he added.

(A fool and a dream is only one step to cross)

This portrait is about Jerry’s dream in writing. The question is, being hurt and beaten in the show business for so many years, would his original passion still exist?

Jerry said: “this book is about to tell everybody that if you have a dream, you have to make your best effort to dream on it”.  It seems that, with a brilliant smile, our Doumyouji Tsukasa (道明寺) remained firm and unyielding.

Q: Your last album was released eight 8 years from now, and over these years, what have changed in your mind?

A: I am getting older, (laughing), I did endure some changes, whether externally or internally, just like a little boy going through the jungle, suffering from setbacks experience, realizing the hardships in the world.

Q: Is it a painful process, being grown up?

A: Yes, I think so, but the pain is an essential nutrient for growing. Should everything undergo a simple way, life would be boring. My feeling is, working through painfully on hardships in your life would be great experience.

Q: In your album, it recorded that you wanted to be an adorable young kid,
do you really want to be one?

A: in fact, not now.  When we were grouped as F4, I always extended my admiration on Vic, whose character is, being so pleasant, warm-chatting, in a way, I started admiring other people’s nice personality.  Now, in fact, I think life-wise should have different characteristics, I will try not to imitate my life with others, I am enjoying my own while getting relaxed at work.

Q: you named your recent album “9314 the Man and the Boy” do you consider yourself now, a Boy OR a Man?

A: When comparing, I am still being naughty now, yet most of the time I try to act as a “big boy”, making great efforts to grow up..

Q: What do you consider characteristics of a matured man ?

A: He should be read as stable, being considerate, as and when necessary, understanding other peoples’ point of view.  This is, in my mind, a Man.

Q: why do we say “A fool and a Dream is only one step to cross"?

A: Before, I considered myself a very simple man, yet I was constantly experiencing combat when contact different perspectives of the human-oriented, it makes you realize, more and more, the world is not so simple. But, if you ultimately try to bless/preserve your innocence, to better match wits timely, only you can, naively, believe you will be getting better and better, and can get more active support. If we were acting cleverly, or, calculating the value of certain things, we might think that it is difficult or even impossible to make tasks possible, then you would easily give up. I think only a fool can, regardless of other people think, or no matter what other people say, very dedicatedly finish what he thinks is very important to him.  I value this to be very important thinking.

期待和平凡天真的女孩子交往  (expectation : dating with an ordinary naive girl)

To begin with, first chapter of this book recorded a love story, beautiful but sad, describing how a boy and a girl struggled through, idealistically and realistically, loving each other.  It was "romantic" when facing with love yet it faded so powerlessly ended up as tragedy, this made one puzzled to whom Jerry quoted as “The Princess”, would she be Chi-Ling Lin  (林志玲) – an assuming figure among the outsiders?? and would Jerry be released out of this piece - described as“lost but wonderful”?

Q: In this book, some emotional problems were mentioned. As an idol actor (actress), there are few people touching this subject. What was touched in your heart?

A: To me, I treat it as living experience really. When sharing with it, it might be a book, or even a story,  actually it is a documentary recording what had happened to me in the past 8 years.,
It might link up in common with each individual, because one should have a path to his dream, and on his dream path, one has to be firm and consistent and due to such consistency, one might encounter setback, but should have grown up a bit after all, this is exactly what I want to share with everyone.

The main purpose of writing this book is not focused on how I feel but to encourage more people in engaging themselves on tasks they immensely involved with, have it accomplished consistently, just like I did.  Now my feeling is quoted as “back to zero”, and this is why I went to the same place to shoot my second album, aiming to set my own self to the original, to read (recognize) Jerry Yan once more.

Regardless on what the media had reported, whether it was misinterpreted, misleading or true, I would rather treat it as a progress in growing, whether I could face up to these ill-interpretations previously made coupled with my expectations to improving myself, day by day, I think, is more important to me now.

Q: In this book, descriptions of the love story are pretty vague and hidden.
Would you care if it should lead to speculations?

A: I would think this is fine with me. I think there were times one would have  love stories of his own , or his better half would have suffered from illness, and it is beyond my control if one would link up these episodes with his imagination.   As to me, it is a beautiful story though in the past, I would still be forever grateful to those who had extended helping hands in my life, and Sis. Chai (柴姐) is being one of those who supplied me with excellent nutrients.

Q: Should you be falling in love again, would you make it known to the public?

A: I haven't thought of that yet, but by that time positively
I would take into considerations if agreed upon by two of us.

Q: Would she be a figure working in the same field, ideally?

A: Actually it came to my mind, would it be very hard looking for lovers in this circle? Settling down with ordinary people would suit me fine, simply being two together would be beautiful.

Q: just like playing idol roles in TV series?

A: Right, hoping to have more opportunities meeting with female friends, probably due to nature of my work, I hardly could find chances even sometimes when hanging out with friends.  My chances are slim, reasons being firstly, I don't really like the idea of going out dancing in ball rooms or pubs, secondly, most of my time are spent to undertake lessons related to my work and I am really very busy concentrating in my homework.  Lastly, I am a dummy with computer work and I very seldom on websites. Thus, when I touched ground on Mainland, I found out ladies in here were simply ordinary people, hopefully I could have the opportunity in getting acquaintances with them. (in laughing !)

Want to try more macho roles

All along, Jerry Yan is the "Idol Prince”- a stunner who acts on screen, though very popular for years, he would rather get rid of that icon so we can see him on a more authentic side.

Q: Your new album is very hot on the market, have you ever thought of that?

A: I would not think of its selling record, whether good or bad. In the past I was a low profile person, would not be so eloquent making conversation, now I would like to have more people to read and understand me.

Your album has an excellent market sale, making money yet relaxing, may it be these reasons that you are fond of making albums?

A: This second album was made 8 years after my first. Other actors would make their albums annually.  Or they would release their albums\ CDs\DVDs in a fix period of time whereas Jerry Yan acted differently.  Among F4, I was the last to release my DVD\CD. I was questioned why being the hottest, making money was so easy no matter what I have in mind, yet I was the last one.  It was because I really wanted to put my best effort in doing all my work and not just aiming at making money.  Therefore my exposure was relatively low and output was less when compared with others.

Q: After this second album, what kind of working arrangement do you have in mind?  Would you try to cooperate with different directors and cast members here in the Mainland?

A: We are thinking of and planning to, making both movies and TV series after this. And, of course hopefully I can make CDs\DVDS too and getting more chances of coming over to publicize my work in press conferences is also in my hopes and I love the idea of shooting here because the casting members are excellent.  If I were offered a compelling role different from the past, I would take it as training.

Q: In your previous acting, you filmed in idol-dramas so many times, have you ever been thinking of trying something new?

A: I’ve been thinking the same, of course.  I must have acted too profound a role in the past that we found similar acting here, they share more or less similarities among roles. But I do appreciate Chang- Han- I(張涵予) acting role in the “Assembly”
I read it as “Terrific acting” ! This is what an artist would love to perform, this role has given a message and others would feel differently, very special… .

Q:  Would love to play more “man’s role”?

A: It was because that role would allow me to change my style. I can wear dirty clothes, or undress my upper part, or be shaved flat-headed, and I am looking forward to acting this! And even more, I also would like to let everybody know that Jerry is not expensive! I know I am trying to be an on trial actor, I would not calculate money on my paycheck, I will be enjoying the process instead, it is the best way to get chances.  My former impressions would make people feel that I am far beyond reach, very remote, hard to find him, but in reality, I do anticipate a welcome to work here.

Reporter's view

That day, Jerry had been interviewed by 4-5 celebrities shows, but he did not show any signs of getting tired. In fact, he is still keen, with rising emotion when making conversations on his work with the journalists. But in his blazing eyes, I could realize this " Idol Prince " had went through all the bitterness, as if causing lives or deaths in the entertainment circle for so many years, he even had bruises all over.  But now, he just wanted to remove his heavy armors, like a young man carrying his dream making much effort to endeavor his trip.

~~ THE END ~~

Teen idol Jerry Yan hits new note for maturity

[Jerry Yan says he wants to be known as a professional actor, not an idol.]

THE conference room is closed, but that does not deter news reporters and TV cameramen from trying to enter.

Nearby in the hallway of the five-star hotel in Beijing, fans jockey to catch a glimpse of the star attraction, a pop singer who has not appeared on Chinese mainland in five years.

The camera-and banner-toting fans, some of them speaking Japanese, scream in delight, despite the entreaties of hotel staff to stay quiet.

They are all waiting for Jerry Yan, a model, singer and actor from Taiwan who was an overnight sensation across Asia nine years ago.

Yan, now 33, has "grown up to be a mature man and artist", he wrote in a new book.

As a step to retool his career on Chinese mainland market, Yan launched the book/CD package, Jerry Yan - 9314 Man and Boy, which details his dreams and reveals secrets of growing up. More than 200 pictures of Yan, shot in Adelaide, Australia, are included.

The book, produced in a limited edition of 2,000, sold out in three minutes during a recent online presales launch. A regular edition is sold in bookstores.

The number 9314 in the title refers to the distance between Taipei and Adelaide.

"It symbolizes the distance to my dream, which takes a long time to cover," he said.

That dream, he said, is to live in the bucolic surroundings of Adelaide, where he would be surrounded by family and barnyard animals on a farm.

But in Beijing, the spotlight was on his life as an entertainer.

"After five years, I am happy to meet many old friends and fans here," he said with his trademark shy smile of dimples and gleaming white teeth.

"If (the press conference) was held earlier, I would have been very nervous in front of so many media friends," he said.

"Eight years ago, when I shot my first photo album, Amphibian, I said offensively to my costume artist that he knew nothing about my dressing style," Yan added, noting his petulance as a young artist.

Despite that, the team, including the costume artist, reassembled for a second album.

"I was forthright," Yan said. "In order to do things better, I always required a lot. But I didn't know how to put myself in others' shoes."

After he took a lead role on the popular television drama series Meteor Garden and its sequel, Meteor Garden II in 2001, he shot to fame and became a teen idol across the continent.

"At that time I had a lot of staff taking care of me and I was treated as a spoiled boy. Thus, didn't care about others," he said.

In his new book he wrote: "It was not until I went though difficulties and hit the lowest point in my career that I learned that every one had been kind to me.

"Because they had always been so caring and friendly I took everything for granted. But during the unhappy times, I learned no one should be good to me, no matter who I was and would be. I learned to cherish."

"After many years, I have gradually learned communication is an art," he said.

During his visit to Beijing he appeared on China Entertainment TV's hostess Li Jing(not the author)'s talk show Close to Star by Jing. After the taping, Li said she was amazed at Yan's change.

"The introverted boy has grown up," she said. On the show, Yan praised the beauty of the hostess, likening her to the goddess Venus and addressing her as "Xiao Jing" as a compliment for yer youthful appearance.

Although Yan's attitude is greatly changed, his striking looks are little altered, fans said.

"He is gorgeous and handsome," said a female journalist. "I almost felt dizzy when he answered my questions, staring at me."

But his face is not the only tool he aims to captivate his audience with; his skills as an actor have won accolades.

"In the photo album, I wore no makeup. It is an attempt to distract people's attention from my appearance." He said his target is to be a compelling and serious actor, as opposed to an idol.

"I am a professional actor and willing to try different roles," he said. "If there are any good roles and scripts, I would take them, regardless of the salary."

His next film, he said, will be his first cooperation with a mainland movie director.

"Though my age has got 10 older, I don't think I am a real man yet. I have learned a lot but am still not mature enough in many things," he said.

Jerry Yan and Shu Qi getting 'materialistic'

As the highly anticipated Taiwanese idol drama, Bai Jing Nv Wang (loosely translated as Material Queen), enters preparation stages, there have been reports that heartthrob Jerry Yan and Shu Qi are set to take on the drama's lead roles.

Producer of the show Chen Yu Shan did not deny the report directly. She said that she has a discussion with Jerry and is now waiting for him to ink the contract.

As for the female lead, Chen refused to confirm reports that Shu Qi would be taking on the role, only saying that the role in question would be taken up by an actress who "is well-known but has not acted in TV dramas before".

Shu Qi, however, denied her involvement.

"For the second half of this year my schedule is all packed. It's impossible for me to take on the drama."

Chen revealed that she had considered casting Jerry's rumored beau and Taiwanese model-turned-actress, Li Chi-ling, but decided that news of the 'reunion' would overshadow the drama. She added that it is also probably impossible that Chi-ling would accept the role too.

Despite Jerry's denial of his participation in this drama series, it was reported that he has been worrying about speaking French and taking violin lessons, a clear indication that he is preparing for his role as a French-speaking violist.

Besides award-winning Taiwanese director Chen Hui-ling, art-director Charles E. McCarry and Sex and the City stylist Patricia field are also slated to join the strong line-up of backstage crew.

The drama will also be filming scenes in France. Budgeted at TWD120m (S$6m), Material Queen is set to be the biggest production in the history of Taiwanese TV drama production.
